Written by Taylor Swift and Jack Antonoff
When the morning came we
Were cleaning incense off your
vinyl shelf ‘cause we lost track of time again
Laughing with my feet in your lap
Like you were my closest friend
“How’d we end up on the floor anyway?”
You say
“Your roommate’s cheap-ass screw top rosé,
That’s how.”
I see you every day now
And I chose you
The one I was dancing with in New York
No shoes
Looked up at the sky and it was
The burgundy on my t-shirt when you splashed your wine into
me and how the blood rushed into my cheeks, so scarlet it
was
The mark they saw on my collarbone the rust that grew
between telephones the lips I used to call home
So scarlet, it was maroon
When the silence came we
Were shaking blind and hazy
How the hell did we lose sight of us again?
Sobbing with your head in your hands
Ain’t that the way shit always ends
You were standing hollow-eyed in the hallway
Carnations you had thought were roses
That’s us
I feel you no matter what
The rubies that I gave up
And I lost you
The one I was dancing with in New York
No shoes
Looked up at the sky and it was (maroon)
The burgundy on my t-shirt when you splashed your wine into
me and how the blood rushed into my cheeks, so scarlet it
was (maroon)
The mark they saw on my collarbone the rust that grew
between telephones the lips I used to call home
So scarlet, it was maroon
And I wake with your memory over me
That’s a real fuckin’ legacy, legacy
And I wake with your memory over me
That’s a real fuckin’ legacy … to leave
The burgundy on my t-shirt when you splashed your wine into
me and how the blood rushed into my cheeks, so scarlet it
was (maroon)
The mark they saw on my collarbone the rust that grew
between telephones the lips I used to call home
So scarlet it was maroon
It was maroon (x2)

I am going to tell you why "Maroon" is one of the most genius song she's ever written. She was able to say "red" six times without actually saying "red" for atleast once. Burgundy, Wine, Scarlet, Maroon, Blood, and Rust are all shades of Red. In fact, she said "red" eight times if we're going to add "Rose and Ruby" from the 2nd verse. This is how you play with words.

"genius" huh. So i guess I've known at least 100+ artists who are geniuses just bcoz you won't find the title in the lyrics. Ohh and for an example I just remembered Shinee's sherlock but never once mentioned "sherlock" in the song but just a metaphor It's not like it's rare for it to be called genius

Does anyone else think that Taylor re-recording her old music is what inspired Midnights? She was re-living the memories of her old songs and that must’ve inspired the idea to make an album about sleepless nights throughout her life.

I love this idea, but also, the last line in Lover is the recording of her saying 'the things that haunt you in the middle of the night'. I wonder if this concept existed since then, but lockdown came and she did folklore and evermore which lead to re recording red and fearless, before she got around to exploring this concept of midnights.

This song is about her relationship in the Red album. Back then she said loving him was red, but now she realizes it was much darker than she thought it was and loving him was maroon instead. It shows that our perceptions of our life experiences change over time which is why Midnights is a brilliant album with a brilliant concept.

1) this is gorgeous. 'That's a real f*cking legacy' 2) I don't see anyone talking about how potentially dark this could be lyrically- the person interacting with Taylor seems to be careless, spilling wine on her and making her flush, leaving marks on her skin- it walks that fine line between intimacy and damage

This song is my favorite from the album. My interpretation is that scarlet could be like the scarlet letter, possibly forbidden or shamed, yet there was a vibrancy until it turned dark: maroon. Maroon can mean to desert someone. I love how many times she uses the variety of red shades, the choice of flowers, and the rust that grew between telephones to show the tarnishing of the relationship. Perfect.

Maroon is my favorite song on the standard version of the album. It’s so dark, edgy, gloomy, and ominous, but very romantic, dreamy, and mesmerizing! It just encapsulates and captivates me in a way I never thought possible and I’m obsessed with how low the pitch goes from the first chorus to the second verse. It’s probably my favorite part of the song!

This song gives me the vibes of "Wildest Dreams", "Red", and "This Love" combined. The longing, the hint of an on and off relationship, the euphoria that comes with it, and the intensity of the relationship. I just realized something!! This is called Maroon because that’s how she felt after this breakup - like she’d been marooned. What a clever word artist! Tay’s creative writing paints pictures and makes you really think. She also makes you empathize with her because of her raw emotion and unabashed honesty. Truly, she is one of the greatest artists to emerge on the music scene in a really long time. Her vocal range, while not superb, is more than made up for by her ability to captivate. All songwriters should take a leaf from her book.

@Cmdr. Shepard I think it’s fair to also note however the contrasting lyric “ the blood rushed into my cheeks, so scarlet, it was maroon.” So in the sense of context and contrasting lyrics, it’s safe to assume both statements she’s singing about herself. My understanding of this is “ so scarlet, it was maroon” is her looking back and realizing something else. Scarlet and Maroon are both shades of Red, however Maroon is much darker. She has described her self has having her iconic red lips constantly in songs- and it’s become somewhat of a character of her. “ the lips I use to call home” as if it’s her identity. It defines her- but she ‘use to’ as if there’s now inner turmoil. it feels almost as if in this song she’s reflecting now and almost realizing there was something darker behind all of this. Not necessarily HER, but whatever this song is about- it seems to kind of imply lyrically - “ the blood rushed into my cheeks, so scarlet (but) it was maroon” Under the assumption it was lighter, brighter- innocent. But in hindsight, she now realizes it wasn’t that. It was maroon. Darker, more damaging. Supporting this further is the contrasting “ I chose you” and “ I lost you”. The song seems to be self reflecting and realizing what she thought was bright “ scarlet” was actually darker “ maroon”. Maybe she had a part in it, maybe she’s second guessing herself. Maybe she’s lost and doesn’t know who or how to define herself, maybe it’s almost her blaming herself to some point. It’s hard to decipher.

the way she expresses her feelings using colors and sounds is so meaningful... In 'Red', she described the youthful and passionate kind of love that she had experienced with an upbeat production. Now in 'Maroon', she is describing that love but with more maturity using mellow production, just like the maroon as a toned down shade of red.

I like to think of it as like a deeper more profound version of red, not a toned down one

Such an awesome song. Taylor has really grown so much as an artist. Her lyrics are more matured and rhythm is perfect. All the tracks are perfect to enjoy the "Midnight"....Love it.

This album was recorded really well. The bass is huge and the vocals don't get overly trebly.

Maroon is almost a purplish red color. It’s unique in a lot of ways. The imagery is just compelling us to really dig deep into what Taylor must have been going through at the time she was with this person she can’t seem to forget. It’s about reminiscing the times where everything felt safe and peaceful.

This song feels so different The details in every line just puts the pieces together so perfectly. The emotions put into this song is just so overwhelming I've never been much of a fan of Taylor but this song really amazes me. It makes my heart beat. Fav song in the album.

Lyrically reminds me of “Red”, musically reminds me of “Dress” with a lower register. Excellent song!!!!!

There seems to be an underlying sadness in the songs I've listen too from this album, I wish her well and hope that she will continue to share her great talent with all of us. Taylor is the Greatest Of All Time. Best wishes to Taylor and thank you!
