What I really love about this song is that so often, we think of “karma” as of getting even with the person, seeking revenge, or seeing them suffer the pain they caused us. While all that can be true too, there can be another side. Finding people who do value us, getting our peace of mind back, or just realizing our own worth and that we can go on without someone can be the “karma.” I love this song so much and it’s truly quickly becoming one of my all time Taylor songs 😊

Swifties, I'd love to know what you think about my theory! The lighter on the cover of Midnight and the Lover house burning in the Eras tour definitely have a connection to a phoenix rising from the ashes. Yup, like Phoenix the city in Arizona where the tour started. Plus midnight it the beginning of a new day. The colour theme for the album that was supposed to come out after 1989 (Karma, the Bleachella Era album, call it what you want to - see what I did here) is rumoured to be orange. Orange, like the word Karma on the wall in The Man's video, like Taylor's outfit when she is in a bird cage (phoenix, again) in the Look what you made me do video, and like the door at the end of the Eras show, apparently. And the last song in the setlist is Karma. The aesthetics of Midnight are very 70s. Some people were surprised when they first heard the album because it has nothing to do with that decade sonically. Here's what I think: the connection with the 70s has much more to do with its typical colour scheme than with its sound. When you think 70s, you think *burnt orange*. So Midnight is the album that never was that finally rose from the ashes. That would also explain the lyrics that feel dated (throwing shade), juvenile (being graded on a curve), and the songs that are supposed to be about Calvin Harris. So, there you have it folks. Midnights is basically "songs from the vault" from the time between 1989 and Reputation (the lost Era sometimes referred to as Karma) plus newer songs.

This song IS a revenge song, at it's core. It's just not a typical revenge song, as it is not HER taking revenge, but rather trusting the process of Karma. Keeping her side of the street clean is essentially her saying that she recognizes her own issues and holds herself accountable for her actions, but the person this song is directed to does not do the same, so for them, Karma is going to sort it out eventually, so Taylor does not have to lift a finger to get revenge, just wait and watch. What goes around comes around, and in Taylor's case, she knows that her actions are bringing about awesome benefits and positive consequences, and really....she's gloating about her Karma being so awesome, haha!
